Presented by the Bulkley Valley Museum the Smithers Culture Crawl starts at the Central Park Building and then takes you on a remarkable and fascinating stroll. The Culture Crawl explores the historical buildings of Smithers and includes featured exhibits in local businesses.

Hong Chong's Laundry and Bath House

Hong Chong's Laundry and Bath house was built in 1920. Hong Chong would charge 25 cents for use of his bathhouse. It is located on Riverside Street and Hankin Avenue in Telkwa.

Hoops' Log House

The Hoops' Log House is located on 5th Street and Hill Avenue/Madison Avenue in Telkwa. The Hoops' Log House was built in 1908 and was owned by the E. Hoops family. They lived in the house from approximately 1915 to 1948.

Houston Anglican Church

For a small glimpse into Houston's past, check out two of the town's oldest buildings, behind the Houston Visitor Centre on Highway 16. The Anglican Church was built in 1917, while the schoolhouse was built in 1916.

Jack McNeil's House

Jack McNeil came to the area in 1905 and set up a business in Aldermere. In 1918, when the town of Aldermere started to diminish, Jack moved across the river to Telkwa where he built himself a new, very comfortable, home with a large fireplace. It is said that Jack often invited traveling salesmen into his home to enjoy a drink by the fireplace. You can find Jack McNeil's House on 5th Street and Hankin Avenue.

Johan Pitka Memorial

Located in Spirit Square, the Johan Pitka Memorial monument commemorates Sir Johan Pitka's time in Fort St. James. A national hero of Estonia, Pitka established a community in the Fort St. James area in the 1920s.

Mason Adam's Drug Store

Mason Adam's Drug Store was built in 1915. It was located beside Telkwa's present day pub, however it was moved to the riverside in the early 30s. This building has seen many changes over the past 100 years, used as the Royal Bank from 1951 to 1982, however the original door still hangs. You can find Mason Adam's Drug Store across from the bridge on Riverside Street in Telkwa

Noralee Church

Located at Noralee Resort the Noralee Church is on the banks of Francois Lake and is a must see if you are in the area. It is a local tourist attraction.

Our Lady of Good Hope Church

Built in 1873, this is one of the oldest Roman Catholic Churches in British Columbia. It is located on Lakeshore Drive overlooking Stuart Lake. Not far beyond the church is the Catholic cemetery where headstones can be seen written in the Carrier syllabics developed by Father Morice.

Sargent's General Store

The Sargent's General Store was built in 1910. It is said to have been the first original pioneer store in the area. The town's post office was attached to the back of the store from 1910 to 1953. You can find the Sargent's General Store on Hill Ave/Madison Ave and Highway 16 in Telkwa.

St Luke's Church on the Lake

St. Luke's Church on the Lake was originally built in 1916 by the early settlers who came to the shores of Francois Lake and throughout most of its existence was operated by the Anglican Synod Diocese of Caledonia. Now owned by the St. Luke's Church on the Lake Organization, the church is being restored.

St. John the Divine Anglican Church

At the Quick West entrance you will find St. John the Divine Anglican Church, built in 1914. It is in its original state. Made out of wood, it uses oil lamps (no electricity) and has a large cast iron stove for heat in the winter. The entrance door is never locked so you are welcome to browse around.

St. John's Anglican Church

St. John's Anglican Church is located on First Avenue in Burns Lake. It was constructed in 1927 by the resident priest, and opened to the public in 1929. The uniquely arched doorway and hill-side location have made St John's Anglican Church one of the most photographed buildings on Highway 16!

St. Stephen's Anglican Church

A charming 1910 church building, the St. Stephen's Anglican Church is managed by the Telkwa Museum. It can be viewed during regular hours or by special request. It is also available for rent for special occasions such as weddings and anniversaries. There is a small room in the back for smaller meetings and a fenced yard for family gatherings.

The Bucket of Blood

The Bucket of Blood was the first house constructed in Burns Lake. It was built by Lyster Mulvaney, the founder of Burns Lake. He lived here with his wife, Lillian. The house was the scene of many meetings with prospectors, land scouts and trappers, and it was here that the first town site was planned. The cabin became known as the Bucket of Blood, as it became used as a gambling club. You can find The Bucket of Blood beside the Lakes District Museum on Main Street in Burns Lake.

The Catholic Church

Telkwa's first Catholic Church was built in 1910, however the church was rebuilt during the 1940s. It is located on Hankin Ave and Highway 16.

The Old Church & Gardens

The building in Smithers is referred to affectionately as The Old Church and started out as St. James Anglican Church in 1913, the same year the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway founded the site we now call the Town of Smithers. Sitting on the corner of King St. and First Ave., St. James church and its church hall became a spiritual and community centre for the growing village and later town.

The Old Forestry Buildings

The Old Forestry Buildings were constructed in 1939 and designated as heritage buildings in 1987. They are now home to the Lakes District Museum and Burns Lake Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Centre. They represent a style common for Forestry Service buildings throughout B.C. You can find these buildings on Main Street in Burns Lake.

The Old Hospital

The Old Hospital was built in 1931 Mrs. Gordon of the Women's Missionary Society of the United Church of Canada. The hospital was officially opened in 1932. It was once the largest public building between Prince Rupert and Prince George. It was declared a heritage building in 1982, and is now used as an office for the Burns Lake Native Development Corporation. You can find the Old Hospital across from the Burns Lake Museum on Highway 16.

The Old Police Building

The Old Police Building was built in 1922, and was the district's police residence, courthouse and jail until the 1950s. The building was declared a municipal heritage building in 1979, and is now used as the Lakes District News office.

The Timmermeister Log House

The Timmermeister Log House was built in 1908 and is located on 5th Street and Hope Avenue. The Timmermeister family lived in this house from 1915 to 1948. This house and the house beside it, Hoops' Log House, are among the oldest buildings in Telkwa.

Tom Creek Steam Shovel

Located at Cottonwood Park in Fort St. James, the Tom Creek Steam Shovel was built by the Marion Steam Shovel Company and was used in the 1930s Omineca Gold Rush.

W34 Junkers Model

Located at Cottonwood Park, this 1/3 scale model of a W34 Junkers Plane signifies the historic background of Fort St. James as a float plane base. Russ Baker, the famed bush pilot who started Central BC Airways in 1946, was based out of Fort St. James in the 1940s. These planes were built in Germany around WWI and were used by Baker's company. They were instrumental in opening up the north for resource development.

Wm. Hunter's House

Wm. Hunter's House was built in 1910 and was home to one of the first prospector's to arrive in the district. He moved to Telkwa in 1903. You can find Hunter's House on Hope Avenue and 5th Street in Telkwa. Hunter's Basin, a valley located high up in the Telkwa Mountains, was named after this prospector.
